The 2019 NFL season is finally here! While we get through training camp and the preseason, let’s take a look at some of the teams nobody’s talking about. When it comes to all-conference teams, which college football conference could boast the best starting lineups of alumni on both sides of the ball? From Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield to Earl Thomas and Chris Harris… let’s take a look at the 2019 All-Big 12 NFL alumni team.
Starter: Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech)
Years at School: 2014 – 2017
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
2018 Stats: 5,097 passing yards / 50 TD / 12 INT / 66.0% completion
The NFL’s reigning MVP, Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in his record-setting 2018 season. Mahomes joined Peyton Manning (55 in 2013) and Tom Brady (50 in 2007) as the only QBs to ever reach the 50 passing touchdown threshold in a single season. The youngest player to win MVP since Dan Marino in 1984, the world is Mahomes’ oyster as he guides a record-setting and historically explosive Kansas City offense. And he’s only been a starter for one full season. If the best is still yet to come for the guy with the best betting odds to win 2019 NFL MVP… watch out.
Backup: Baker Mayfield (Texas Tech & Oklahoma)
Years at School: 2013 (TTU), 2014-2017 (OU)
Current Team: Cleveland Browns
2018 Stats: 3,725 passing yards / 27 TD / 14 INT / 63.8% completion
A Heisman Trophy winner and the top overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, Baker Mayfield exploded onto the scene in 2018. An enigmatic presence at QB, Mayfield has helped give the Browns as much hope as the team’s had at any point this decade. Extrapolate his numbers from the final 7 games of the 2018 season over 16 games, and Mayfield would’ve gone for almost 4,500 yards and 39 touchdowns. He’s proving he’s the truth and could be the linchpin to one of the NFL’s most dangerous offensive attacks.
Andy Dalton (TCU), Kyler Murray (Oklahoma)
Starter: Joe Mixon (Oklahoma)
Years at School: 2014 – 2016
Team: Cincinnati Bengals
2018 Stats: 1,168 rush yards / 8 rush TDs / 43 rec. / 296 rec. yards / 1 rec. TD
One of the NFL’s breakout running backs in 2018, Joe Mixon powered his way to 4.9 yards per carry and the fourth-highest rushing total in the league despite missing two games. Mixon’s 83.4 rush yards per game was third best in the league and he didn’t fumble once all season. Emerging as one of the league’s best young backs, Mixon is as dangerous a do-it-all running back as there is in the NFL.
Backup: Chris Carson (Oklahoma State)
Years at School: 2015 – 2016
Team: Seattle Seahawks
2018 Stats: 1,151 rush yards / 9 rush TDs / 20 rec. / 163 rec. yards
So the All-Big 12 NFL Alumni Team has two top-5 rushers from 2018… and both are 24 or younger? Sheesh. Carson’s 1,151 rush yards put him at #5 among all rushers in 2018… not too shabby for a second-year guy who was a 7th round pick in 2017. Carson looks to be a major value steal at the RB spot in 2019 fantasy drafts as he helped guide Seattle to being the league’s #1 rushing attack just a year ago.
Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma), Darren Sproles (Kansas State)
