If you’re a supremely casual tennis fan – that might not even be the right way to put it – If your knowledge of tennis is less than extensive (that’s better), then you might not be able to name any tennis player outside of the Williams sisters, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer.

That’s a testament to all that they’ve done for tennis, because I know their names and I’ve maybe watched four tennis matches in my life.

Their level of dominance has forced tennis into the mainstream sports circuit and has forced people like me to take note of their greatness, but as they get older, the focus has slightly shifted to the next generation of stars capable of carrying the game. That’s not to say any of them are set to retire tomorrow, but at the same time, what’s the sport going to look like when they decide to hang it up?

Nadal and Federer faced off in the Wimbledon semi-final on Friday in another classic, as Federer bested Nadal in advanced to the final to take on Djokovic on Sunday. Serena Williams is already in Saturday’s women’s final, and, again, the respective finals for each division feature familiar names.

This year, though, 15-year old CoCo Gauff’s run shifted the conversation to the future and stole the headlines.

So, at what point do you ask yourself, what does the future of tennis look like? Well, why not now?
